About the designer
Ernesto Gismondi/
Italian designer and engineer Ernesto Gismondi is known for his contribution to the world of lighting design, through the famous Artemide lamp manufacturer , which he co-founded in 1960.
Gismondi was born in 1931 in San Remo, and studied aeronautical engineering at the Polytechnic of Milan, where he graduated in 1957; he continued his studies in Rome at the Professional Engineering School, where he graduated in Missile Engineering in 1959.
In 1960 he founded Artemide with the engineer and architect Sergio Mazza (born in Milan in 1931). The objective of the two is to create timeless and innovative objects from a technical point of view, and both will make an important contribution to the catalog of manufacturing, in continuous evolution and expansion. The mission of Artemide becomes the idealistic realization of lighting unique and inspired by architecture – a goal achieved also thanks to collaborations with talents from the Italian and non-Italian design world. One of Gismondi’s most iconic designs for Artemide is the Sintesi series (1976), which includes table, floor and wall lamps; the Tholos wall lamp (1979), and the Tebe floor lamps (1970s) and Zen (1988).
Between 1964 and 1984, Gismondi taught engineering at the Milan Polytechnic, and in the 1980s he joined the collective of radical designers gathered around Ettore Sottsass , also supporting him economically.
Gismondi’s contribution to the world of lighting design was consecrated by various awards and honors, including the Compasso d’Oro career award in 1994, the European Design Prize in 1997, and the Ernst & Young award for “Entrepreneur of the Year “in 2008 and 2009. He was also vice president of ADI (Association of Industrial Design), and held important positions in the design world, for example at the Ministry of University and Research, and the Scientific Committee of the ISIA

Manufacturer Information
Artemide/
The legendary Italian lighting company Artemide was founded in the province of Milan in 1959 by the designer and engineer Ernesto Gismondi, born in Sanremo in 1931, and by the designer Sergio Mazza, born in Milan in 1931. As is known, it was the latter who to design Alfa Lamp , the first successful product of the company, a year before the launch of Artemide . In the following decades both founders continue to create new designs for the ever-evolving collections of Artemide, whose goal is to develop distinctive and eye-catching lamps, including pendant and ceiling lamps, in collaboration with the major design talents from around the world.
Great pieces of success from the vast Artemide catalog include: the Eclisse (1967) Space Age by Vico Magistretti and the minimal halogen desk lamp Tizio (1972) by the Italian-German designer Michele De Lucchi which has become one of the more office accessories popular never produced. The 80s are witnesses of the launch of Tolomeo Lamp (1987), designed by the Italians and Giancarlo Fassina, who soon became an international symbol of the “Made in Italy” style that dominated the design scene at the end of the last century. Today Artemide continues to commission high-tech and highly conceptual works – increasingly with a focus on sustainability – to well-known international designers, such as Herzog & De Meuron, Naoto Fukasawa, Karim Rashid , and Zaha Hadid , among others . Over the decades many of Artemide’s lighting designs have been honored by the prestigious Compasso d’Oro, and the company itself won the “Career Achievement” award in 1995.
For more than 50 years, Artemide’s approach has set the pace for design innovation with sophisticated products, which often end up on the pages of books that deal with the history of design. Many pieces have been acquired from museum collections around the world, from MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan, the National Gallery of Milan Modern Art in Rome, and the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris.
